Bosses liable for Xmas party frolics

Bosses have been warned they can be found liable for workers' drunkenness at office Christmas parties.

The caution came from Patrick Perry, writing on Building Design, the architects' website. He said firms should be worried about workers' behaviour and take steps to limit any problems.

Employers should make clear what behaviour is acceptable and importantly whether, once the party has ended, workers are required to return to their desks.

"Prevention is better than a cure," Mr Perry advised. "Crucially, you must be seen to have taken reasonably practicable steps to prevent unacceptable behaviour taking place."

He suggested a written policy be prepared, one that also allowed for workers to make complaints should they be upset by other revelers.

Should disputes arise, Mr Parry advised management to take all problems seriously.

They should "go through the grievance, disciplinary and dismissal procedures as appropriate", and not ignore bad behaviour.

Xpert Hr recommends bosses keep up with changes in the law and carefully consider dietary requirements.
