OFT offers firms legal advice

26/11/2008

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has prepared a guide for businesses to help them remain within the law.

It covers consumer and competition law and is relevant to workers in legal jobs and businesses of all sizes.

Senior director of policy Ali Nikpay explained that recently there have been a number of legislative changes, which affect UK companies.

"This new guide is an excellent tool for anyone dealing with consumers in a business context," he said.

The OFT advice makes clear the rules regarding distance selling, and illegal cartel activity as well as new advertising rules and licensing agreements.

Recent changes have for example, affected estate agents who are now required by law to join an approved redress scheme.

The Citizens Advice Bureau is often the first point of call for dissatisfied consumers. A national charity, the organisation has received an additional £10 million from the government to help it continue its work.
