Economy puts graduates off job search
25/11/2008
Graduates are so worried about weakening employment opportunities they are more likely to put off their job search and take a year off, Onrec has reported.
A survey by Bright Futures, a national student organisation, revealed 75 per cent of students are less confident of securing a graduate post and an extra third will now opt for a gap year.
Students also consider it unlikely the economy will start growing again till 2010 (85 per cent) and expect to have to take lower salaries (65 per cent).
According to the National Union of Students (NUS) difficult economic conditions have forced more of its members to study locally.
Its Student Experience Report revealed the NUS is worried poorer students are restricted in their choice of university.
"Fees and spiralling living costs are forcing those from poorer backgrounds to choose a university close to home," said president Wes Streeting.
