Jobs lost will need to be filled again come 2010

19/11/2008

Migration is likely to create new jobs that will need to be filled after the recession has come to an end, the Local Government Association (LGA) has said.

A spokesperson for the LGA said that there would be a total of 650,000 job losses which would need to be filled come 2010.

"Migration will give a buffer because we've had a lot of migration [over the last] three years, particularly in London," he said.

"It will be the migrants going back to Poland and Eastern Europe so you will get [the jobs they did whilst here] not being filled.

"We're talking about complete job losses, not just redundancies which will take a part of that."

According to a report from the LGA this month, cities outside of London such as Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle are likely to fair better than the capital during the job losses.

Construction and manufacturing jobs are likely to be industries that feel the cuts hardest, with highly skilled industries remaining relatively unscathed.
