TUC: Workers look for fair pay
01/09/2008
Fair pay is the most commonly sought after job benefit, a new survey has revealed.
The Trades Union Congress' poll of more than 2,500 people in work found 98 per cent of respondents rated it above working with great colleagues (90 per cent) and opportunities for promotion (73 per cent).
However, the survey did reveal widespread dissatisfaction with increasing workloads and pay levels that failed to keep pace with living costs.
General secretary Brendan Barber noted: "There are some challenging figures here for British employers."
He warned there may be no "magic bullet" for improving Britain's productivity and recommended employers consider "engaging staff and providing the training and advancement opportunities they want".
The poll was conducted by YouGov and released ahead of the unions' 140th Congress, which begins next week in Brighton.
