TUC expects 'decisive action'

13/08/2008

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called for the government and the
Bank of England to take decisive action on rising unemployment.

Its head of economic and social affairs Adam Lent said if they fail to
act, jobless figures will continue to increase and
inactivity will carry "a high economic and social price".

Employment figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed 60,000 more people are now without work.

"Unions are looking for action to boost demand; we urge the Bank
to cut interest rates and the government to take the cap off
public sector wage increases," Mr Lent said.

ONS figures have revealed there are 1.67 million people unemployed and
manufacturing jobs were hit hardest by the recent economic down turn.

The government acknowledged there has been an increase in the number of
people in employment and noted the employment rate has also fallen.ADNFCR-1196-ID-18730046-ADNFCR
