Govt crackdown on rogue bosses
05/08/2008
Government has announced further initiatives in its crackdown on rogue employers.
The Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform is introducing a helpline for workers and a £6 million information campaign aimed to raise awareness of employment rights.
The Vulnerable Workers Enforcement Forum, which has been working with the government, has found "there are still dark corners of the labour market where rogue employers seek to mistreat their workers".
Employment relations minister and forum chair, Pat McFadden said: "We want to prevent unscrupulous employers who undercut honest competition and prey on people who are fearful or so desperate to earn a living that they are open to exploitation."
Mr McFadden will also chair a new Fair Employment Enforcement Board that will co-ordinate the work of the government enforcement agencies.
Workers in legal jobs sometimes see cases against rogue employers - these employees are often expected to demonstrate a level of confidentiality in their daily practice.
