Thousands could miss work for match

02/07/2008

Thousands of employees could call in sick to watch British hopeful, Andy Murray, take on Rafael Nadal today, it has been reported.

The up-and-coming tennis star faces the hardest match of his career - research from one personnel software company has suggested many workers will put theirs on hold to follow his progress.

Employersafe, which produces absenteeism monitoring software, has claimed workers taking time off already costs the UK £1 million each week.

Head of personnel, Pam Rogerson says: "Our evidence suggests that many workers will see the prospect of him repeating the feat against Nadal as too good to miss."

The company found the most commonly used excuses for missing work are long lunches, meetings out of the office, and doctor's appointments.

According to separate government studies, local authority staff took 9.6 days on average off per year.
