Unions: Data losses should halt job cuts

27/06/2008

Civil service unions have told the government to stop cutting jobs following recent high-profile data losses.

The Public and Commercial Services Union represents staff from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), who are at the centre of government spending cuts.

"With the government cutting 25,000 jobs at HMRC and inflicting budget cuts [to] 2011, it is difficult to see how world-class IT standards can be achieved without additional resources," said legal secretary, Mark Serwotka.

His concerns were supported by Jonathan Baume, general secretary of senior public service union, FDA.

Mr Baume claimed changes at HMRC were happening against a "constant backdrop of ever-decreasing resources".

The Poynter Review revealed staff in the department, which lost details of 25 million child benefit claimants, were weary of change and unhappy.
