IoD: Overwhelming support for flexible working

27/06/2008

The Institute of Directors (IoD) has found an overwhelming level of support for flexible working practices.

It research revealed, among UK companies, more than eight in ten said they operated flexible working and 93 per cent said they would do so without any legal requirement.

"In terms of both time and location, flexible working practices are almost certain to expand considerably over the coming years," observed director general, Miles Templeman.

"What business doesn't need is the heavy hand of government, when, as this survey shows, the business case is far more compelling and persuasive than regulation."

The institute discovered the main drivers of flexible working practice were recruitment, retention and supporting business needs.

It revealed the main barriers to adopting flexible working practices were operational, line management issues and fear of fragmentation.

One IT recruiter's survey has revealed almost half (45.2 per cent) of its respondents have said industry has not adapted to flexible working practices
