Immigration law leaves domestic visa untouched

25/06/2008

The government's new immigration rules continue to let workers on domestic visas use recruitment agencies to find work.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation was concerned a Home Office review would recommend changes which threatened their use.

"Many domestic workers escape abusive employment relationships with the families they are based with, through seeking new work opportunities through recruitment agencies," claimed Anne Fairweather, head of public policy.

"This route would have been closed down under the original plans."

Changes include new business visas for sportspeople and entertainers, a maximum leave period of six months and low-cost travel visas.

"Now we are introducing an Australian-style points system for selective migration, it makes sense to tighten visit visas at the same time," said immigration minister, Liam Byrne.
