Asian and black managers "disappointed" with career progression

20/06/2008

Black and Asian managers are disappointed with their career progression, according to new research.

The study by the Department of Work and Pensions has found significant differences between the experiences and aspirations of managers from different ethnic groups.

It found 23 per cent of black and 21 per cent of Asian managers rated their career progression as "disappointing", while only 13 per cent of those from both white or mixed race backgrounds did so.

Furthermore, white managers were most likely to want to work for smaller companies and higher proportions of black and Asian managers indicated that they would like to become a chief executive officer or board member.

It concluded potential managers from under-represented groups have high career and workplace expectations.

The study noted "the availability of potential candidates may not be the main issue when dealing with recruitment from under-represented groups".

"It may be more about how to change the perceptions of certain aspects of your organisation's working culture."

The Office for National Statistics has revealed unemployment rose by 38,000 between January and April.
