Half of school leavers prefer jobs to uni
17/06/2008
Half of all school leavers prefer to get work than enter higher education, according to research by the Alliance and Leicester.
The lender researched the attitudes of 16-24 year olds as part of a new advertising initiative and found an increasing amount going directly into work.
Its marketing campaign features Gok Wan, celebrity stylist and host of How to Look Good Naked. Mr Wan urged school leavers to avoid courses that provided little professional training.
He said "everyone needs the opportunity to go to university if they want to," but added, "if you are not going to university don't feel like you are not going to be given the same opportunities."
The Times Higher Education Supplement recently reported the director-general for higher education, Ruth Thompson, saying the government never thought it would hit its higher education targets.
