Managers: 61 % lack computer skills

16/06/2008

New research has revealed 61 per cent of mangers are thought to lack the computer skills required by their bosses.

They were also found to be short of general ICT awareness and the will to seek advice from their own staff.

Around one in six employers stated their management staff "lacked the required ability to see/drive new implementations of IT for business benefit", a nation-wide survey by employment organisation, e-skills UK has found.

"In certain cases, it is not the actual/potential IT skills of management that are in question but their attitude to IT that is the problem," it said.

The study revealed five per cent lacked the ability to improve their IT skills and one in ten companies said their managers were unable to direct funding to IT activities.

The research also revealed workers who wanted to get into companies lacked the appropriate expertise - 43 per cent of entry-level applicants had skills below the required level.

The government has announced a new skills training package and compulsory training for unemployed workers.
