TUC: Still a lot to be done on equality
11/06/2008
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has said there is still a lot to be done to ensure equality for women in the workplace.
It has called for a new assessment of the value and perception of women's contribution to the workplace, one which accepts their "worth is based on something other than the hours they spend in the office".
Head of equality and employment rights, Sarah Veal, said: "There is an awful lot that has to be done to put women in the position where they absolutely would have to be paid equally."
"We might have to say: 'Look, it's not acceptable any longer that you don't do more to accommodate woman and you're going to have to invest in them by doing things differently.'"
The Law Society reported recently a male solicitor earned an average annual salary of £60,000, compared to a female's £41,000 a 32 per cent difference.
