Study: Huge pay gaps in legal jobs
23/05/2008
A new study soon to be revealed by the Law Society will show a huge gap remains in pay levels, the Times has learnt.
The paper reported the society's study will show men earn on average £19,000 more than women and white workers are paid £10,000 more than black or ethnic minority professionals in legal jobs.
Chairwoman of the Association of Women Solicitors, Fiona Fitzgerald, said the pay gap shows not only are women not equally paid "they are not making the progress through the profession that they should".
She said there is a secretive culture within the profession, and in others, which "is slowly changing".
She noted an increase in female solicitors of last year's intake 60 per cent were female and she found increasingly "women entering the profession are demanding change".
The latest labour market statistics revealed of the 22 million people in full-time employment in the three months to March, 7.86 million were women.
