Millions work from home

16/05/2008

Millions of employees will have worked from home as part of the National Work from Home Day, its organisers claimed.

Work Wise UK devised the event to raise awareness of the benefits of home working, which it claims greatly enhance people's work-life balance, and improves employee relations.

The day coincides with Gordon Brown's announcement of new regulations, which extend the right of parents to apply for flexible working conditions.

Accepting recommendations made by Imelda Walsh, Sainsbury's human resources director, he noted employers are still not obliged to grant workers leave to work from home.

Mr Brown said: "Flexible working is the right to request flexible working, it is not an automatic right to flexible working."

Citing national statistics, Work Wise UK claims the highest proportion of home workers is in the south-east (excluding London) with nearly 15 per cent. Scotland has the lowest proportion in the UK with 8.5 per cent.
