Privacy International: NSDR is likely to be illegal

15/05/2008

Watchdog, Privacy International, has warned the National Staff Dismissal Register (NSDR) is likely to be illegal.

The database is supported by a host of UK employers, including employers of legal jobs and major retailers including Harrods, HMV, Mothercare & Selfridges.

The privacy group's representative has warned "employers who want this database have to make their case to parliament, or else they will be soon in the courts".

"Without legal backing this database is likely to be illegal," they continued. "There is no way that this database is necessary or in the substantial public interest."

The initiative was started by Action Against Business Crime and keeps records of any employees who "have been dismissed or have left employment whilst under investigation for acts of dishonesty".

It claims the register will allow "cost saving through reduction in losses, and a more efficient recruitment process".
