New Mayor needs to push skills strategy
02/05/2008
The new Mayor of London needs to implement the London Skills and Employment Board's (LSEB) skills strategy, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has said.
The Mayor will chair the LSEB, which was established to improve adult skills and employment in London.
Its interim report, published in March, identified the capital's priorities, which include streamlining funding, increasing apprenticeships and establishing an Adult Advancement and Careers Service.
Incumbent mayor, Ken Livingstone, said: "The engagement from the public and private sectors in helping us to develop a London Skills and Employment Strategy demonstrates a strong commitment to tackle the unacceptably high levels of worklessness in London."
CBI director, Nigel Bourne, said there were only two further initiatives London's representative need work on, the delivery of Crossrail and the preparation for the 2012 Olympics.
"Alongside the delivery of major infrastructure and skills, we also need the right approach to meeting the challenges of climate change and crime," he added.
