Temp bill will exclude some contractors
07/04/2008
A proposed equal rights bill for temporary workers would exclude IT and engineering contractors, it has been reported.
The Temporary and Agency Workers Bill, otherwise known as the Equal Treatment Act will not benefit some trades, its architect claimed.
Labour MP, Andrew Miller, said the bill was "designed to exclude professional IT contractors and similar people".
The Association of Technology Staffing Companies (ATSCo) has explained that these workers "usually earn significantly more than their full-time counterparts and choose to work as contractors because of the flexible lifestyle benefits".
Chief executive Ann Swain was pleased her recommendations had been considered, saying: "This message is finally getting through to UK lawmakers."
For a bill to become law, it must pass through three stages in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
