Workers will go virtual
04/04/2008
Workers at IBM will soon be able to discuss their jobs and careers in the company's own cyber-world.
By adopting a private area of virtual world, Second Life, the firm will be the first to create a secure virtual environment in which its staff are represented by avatars.
Ginsu Yoon, vice president of business affairs at Linden Labs, creators of the virtual world, claimed it was" a major milestone in the evolution of the internet".
IBM's virtual world will allow workers to meet and discuss business within a safe environment without the need to send information across the internet.
Launched in 2003 the site has a convertible currency, the Linden Dollar. It is home to a range of communities, some even have legal jobs and trade land objects.
IBM will host its part of Second Life on its servers and according to Mr Yoon, the development will "help accelerate the growth and adoption of all virtual worlds".
