New lawyers could be asked to wait for jobs

Trainee lawyers hoping to start at large firms may be asked to delay their careers as a result of the global financial crisis.

Speaking to Legal Week, a spokesperson for Herbert Smith said: "At present we have not asked future joiners to defer. However, we are keeping all our options open as to how more broadly we seek to manage the impact of the present global downturn on our business."

Potential new lawyers searching for job vacancies did receive positive news when the Association of Graduate Recruiters claimed there would be a two per cent rise in available graduate positions in 2009 in its Winter Review Survey.

That is in contrast to a general fall in expected graduate vacancies of 5.4 per cent in the year ahead, revealed in the same research.

It was also expected there would be more openings for graduates to begin their careers in the public sector and engineering but a significant decrease in the banking and construction industries.
